I have a harder time with alternative history fiction. This sequel covers much of the same time period, but following the tales of the ‘Reds’: What’s worse is that characters that I genuinely enjoyed in the first book are twisted so that they fit in to said racial divisions for story purposes.

Beginning in the first book, Alvin and the Prophet played pivotal roles in each other’s lives; here, Card begins his narrative back when Alvin is six, in order to retell that episode from the Prophet’s perspective.
