It’s just that it felt that with more confident handling and sharper editing, it could have been so chroniclss better. However, as I suggested, it is actually two stories in one. Jun 28, Ben Frey rated it it was amazing.

In fact they chronicless Game of Thrones but with dunctton Just fair warning! I just fail to read it. Not only does Horwood have a brilliant grasp of the natural settings of his books, from temperature to plant life, but also he does not ram this down readers throats, so that the “beauty” of flowers, rocks and hills is not overshadowed by their scientific nature or even their uses in the life of moles. Duncton Wood (Duncton Chronicles, #1) by William Horwood

This book is about moles and unlike anything you have ever read before. It occasionally fell flat for me in its execution; there were times where the story called for more suspension of disbelief than I could manage, was too romanticised for my tastes, or felt to be just flat out long-winded or dunctton. The religion the moles practice hints to me of pagan celtic nature worship, they revere the standing stones, still standing, left by that civilization in the British isle millennia ago. I’m pleased for them and for Horwood. There are students, a population of fairies, a tribe of goblins that have allied themselves with the Rat King, and a pack of dogs. I understand that this only increases in the future books of the series, which disappoints me, because I found it a little too preachy.

If I don’t like a book The series consists of three novels: It has stood the test of time and childhood memories. When Horwood is concentrating on the goings on in the Duncton system, describing the moles and their daily lives, he is at his strongest.

As an adult fairy tale though, it is outstanding and memorable.

Guys, this is honestly just one of the best, most underrated and under-read fantasy novels ever written. If Richard Adams Watership Down and Tolkien wrote a book together however unlikely that sounds it might look something like Duncton Wood. The story they are engaged in is one functon a group of talking rabbits could plausibly undertake.

Duuncton the book is pure beauty, with passages unafraid to tackle emotion yet flawlessly blended with natural detail. The inhabitants of the now-flourishing Duncton system look upon the events of the past with reverence. Think Lord of the Rings with moles. Duncton Wood is a first novel, and it shows.

Review of the Duncton Chronicles by William Horwood

These parts of the book fly by and I am never less than interested in what is happening to Mekkins and Rose and the Pasture moles. Views Read Edit View history. Free with day trial. I think that it is mostly overlooked chronicoes all the characters are moles. Perhaps in anothe I’ve been reading this book slowly — a few pages at a time — for the last four years.

I know that Watership Down is read in schools throughout the UK as part of the English literature course but I honestly think that this is even better.

Yet, in spite of my complaints, I repeat, this isn’t a bad book. Perhaps in another four years, I’ll finish that one.
